A Vermont cheesemaker lost nearly $1 million in Canadian sales last year because of President Trump’s tariffs.

This is happening all over the country, it’s choking our small businesses.

Mateo Kehler, co-founder and chief executive officer of Jasper Hill Farm in Greensboro, says he expected to ship nearly $1 million worth of artisan cheese north of the border last year, about 7 percent to 8 percent of the creamery’s annual sales.

But that business dried up within a month after President Trump announced 25 percent tariffs on most Canadian imports in February 2025 and then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau countered with retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods.
